Do Older Workers obstruct IT-enabled Productivity? Firm-level Evidence from Germany
نویسندگان
چکیده
The paper analyses the relationship between labour productivity, the proportion of older employees and IT intensity in firms. Using firm-level data from German manufacturing and services industries, we find that workers older than 49 are not significantly less productive than prime age workers, whereas workers younger than 30 are significantly less productive than prime age workers. There is no significant interaction between the proportion of older workers and IT intensity, thus, older workers do not obstruct IT-enabled labour productivity. Moreover, older workers using a computer are more productive than older non-computer users — a result which is in line with previous findings obtained independently of the age structure of employees. JEL-classification: J14, J24, O33

Do Older Workers Lower IT - Enabled Productivity ? Firm - Level Evidence from Germany
The paper provides empirical evidence for the question whether firms’ ITenabled labour productivity is affected by the age structure of the workforce. We apply a production function approach with heterogenous labour to firmlevel data from German manufacturing and services industries. We find that workers older than 49 are not significantly less productive than prime age workers, whereas workers...

متن کاملThe Impact of Training on Productivity and Wages. Evidence from Belgian Firm Level Panel Data
This paper uses longitudinal data of more than 13,000 firms to analyze the effects of on-the-job training on firm level productivity and wages. Workers receiving training are on average more productive than workers not receiving training. This makes firms more productive. On-the-job training increases firm level measured productivity between 1 and 2%, compared to firms that do not provide train...
متن کاملAge, Wage and Productivity: Firm-Level Evidence
In this paper, we estimate the profile of productivity by age through the estimation of production functions. ‘Productivity’ is defined as the average contribution of age groups to the productivity of firms. Our data are a matched employer-employee dataset covering about 70,000 firms in the late 1990’s in France. We find that productivity increases with age until age 40 and then remains stable ...
متن کاملReciprocity in the workplace
Using combined experimental and survey data, this paper provides empirical evidence that firm productivity is related to worker’s pro-social behavior in the workplace. At the firm level, we find a strong positive relationship between firm productivity and reciprocating behavior among workers. Investigating workers’ individual behavior we find a similar, strong relationship when regressing earni...
